Is It the Lock, or Is It the Door?

When the lock is the problem

The key feels gritty or won't turn, the knob spins without catching, or the deadbolt moves slowly even when the door is fully open. The trick is to test it while the door is open. If the bolt continues to drag with nothing in its way, the problem is inside the lock, which can be repaired or replaced with a new cylinder.

When the door is the problem

The key turns fine, but you must lift, push, or lean against the door to secure the bolt. That's the door and frame moving, not the lock failing. Humidity expands wood, and storm season shifts frames enough to knock the bolt out of alignment with the strike plate. We will tell you that is what you are looking at, rather than sell you hardware that will stick the same way.

Why Venice Homeowners Call Us for Lock Repair

We Repair Before We Replace

Many locks that feel dead only need servicing. We check that before quoting new hardware.

We Check the Door Too

A bolt that will not line up is the frame, not the lock. We tell you which one it is.

No Door Left Open

We carry replacement hardware, so a lock that cannot be saved is replaced the same visit.

One Key for Every Door

We key new locks to a key you already carry. Front, back, garage and shed, one key.

We Check for Salt Corrosion

Hardware near the water corrodes from the inside. We service for it and say which brands last here.

The Price Before We Arrive

You get the number when you call, not after a technician is looking at your lock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my lock be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Most locks can be repaired. A cylinder that has gone gritty usually just needs taking apart, cleaning and servicing. We replace a lock when the internals are worn past the point of holding a key properly, or when the body itself is cracked. Our technician checks the repair first and tells you which one you are looking at before any money is spent.

My key turns but the door will not latch. Is that the lock?

Usually not. If the key turns freely and the bolt moves when the door is open, the lock is working and the door has shifted out of line with the frame. Humidity and storm season both do this. Realigning the strike plate fixes it, and it costs far less than new hardware.

How long should a door lock last in Florida?

Less time than the packaging claims, especially close to the water. Salt air works into the internals and corrodes them from the inside, so a lock a few miles from the Gulf can stiffen years earlier than the same lock inland. Servicing a lock before it seizes is what makes it last.

Can you make all my doors open with one key?

Yes. We key new locks to match a key you already carry, so the front door, back door, garage entry and shed all take the same one. It is easiest when the hardware is going on anyway, so mention it when you book.

Will you install a lock I bought myself?

Yes. Bring us the box and we will fit it, as long as it suits your door and the existing prep. Tell us the brand and model when you call and we will tell you whether it fits before anyone comes out.

Do you repair locks on sliding glass doors?

Yes. Patio slider latches corrode faster than any other lock on a Florida house because of their exposure. We repair or replace the latch, and we can add a secondary lock or a track pin so the door cannot be lifted out of its frame.
