Ignition Repair Services We Handle

Ignition Repair

We disassemble the cylinder in the car, service the worn internals, and reassemble it so that the key turns properly again.

Ignition Replacement

When a cylinder is beyond repair, we install a new one and connect it to your vehicle where it is.

Key Stuck in the Ignition

A stuck key is usually caused by a worn cylinder or a selector fault. We free it without exerting any force.

Broken Key in the Ignition

We extract the snapped piece without damaging the cylinder and cut a replacement on the spot.

Matched to Your Existing Key

On most makes a new ignition can be keyed to the key you already carry, so you leave with one key instead of two.

Worn Key, Not a Bad Ignition

Sometimes the ignition is fine and the key has worn down. We check that first, because a new key costs a fraction of a new ignition.

Repair or Replace?

When the cylinder can be rebuilt

Most ignitions that get stiff or gritty are worn out, not broken. The wafers and springs are taken out, cleaned and serviced and the cylinder is put back to work. That's the cheaper way, and that's what we try first.

When it needs replacing

A cracked housing, a cylinder that has been forced, or internals worn past holding a key all mean a new unit. We fit it at the vehicle and key it to your existing key where the make allows.

Why Venice Drivers Call Us for Ignition Work

We Check the Key First

A worn key fails the same way a worn ignition does. We rule that out before quoting the bigger job.

Repair Before Replace

Most cylinders can be serviced rather than swapped. We try that route first, because it costs less.

No Tow Needed

The column comes apart at the car. Driveway, parking lot or roadside, wherever it sits.

One Key, Not Two

Where the make allows, the new ignition is keyed to the key you already carry.

We Say If It Is Dealer Only

A few makes keep ignition work locked to the dealer. You hear that on the phone, not in your driveway.

The Price Before We Arrive

You get the number when you call, not once a technician is standing at your car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to take the steering column apart?

Usually yes. The ignition cylinder sits inside the column, so the trim has to come off to reach it. It goes back together before we leave, and the job is done at your vehicle rather than at a shop.

Will this affect the airbag or the steering wheel?

No. Ignition work stays on the cylinder and the column trim around it. The airbag, the wheel and the clock spring are not disturbed, and nothing in the safety system is touched.

What if the key snapped off inside the ignition?

We extract the broken piece first, which is a separate step from the repair itself. Once it is out, we can tell whether the cylinder survived or needs replacing, and we cut you a fresh key the same visit.

Can the ignition be rebuilt, or does it need a new one?

Most can be rebuilt. A cylinder that has gone stiff with wear usually cleans up and goes back in working. We replace it when the housing is cracked, when it has been forced, or when the internals no longer hold a key.

Does ignition work affect the immobilizer or the car's computer?

On many vehicles a new ignition has to be introduced to the immobilizer before the engine will run. That is part of the job and we handle it at the car, so you are not left with a cylinder that turns but will not start.

Can you repair the ignition on a push to start car?

Push to start vehicles have no cylinder to repair, so the fault is usually elsewhere, such as the fob, the brake switch or the start button itself. Tell us what happens when you press it and we will tell you whether it is something we handle.
